I just started a new website on my HostGator Account using the WordPress Quick Install option.

With this Quick Install starting with WordPress is even faster and less complicated than ever:

Choose your Domain, fill in your Email address, Name of the Site (Blog Title), First Name and Last Name and off you go...

I received a review copy of Joomla! 1.5 Multimediafrom Packt Publishers and was expecting to read a lot that I already know about Images and the image manager in Joomla!.

But instead it was an eye-opener about the possibilities that Joomla! and some special extensions gives you to create a complete multimedia experience for your visitors.

This book is a great addition to your search engine optimisation efforts as we all now that video, mp3, podcast en mobile web interfaces are becoming more important everyday.

Joomla! 1.5 Multimedia will have some information for you that you can skip through if you are building Joomla! websites for a longer period of time, but the main part of the book will help you to further improve your and your customers websites.

I am not going the repeat the complete list of chapters of this book, you can follow the link above to get a better content listing than I can do... what I will tell you which chapters captured my special interest:

Chapter 3: Text, Characters and Fonts: This shows you some good information on how to improve accessibility and still play with fonts in your design.

Chapter 5: Using Audio: How to setup podcasts and the handling of mp3s which is very good in combination with normal blogging.

Chapter 6: Using video: Of course information about Video including a few extensions that will aid you in your efforts to use video in Joomla!

Chapter 7: Collaboration with external resources: You don't need to produce all the videos yourself, you can also pull from other resources and this chapter shows some very neat information about how to do that the right way.

Chapter 8 about templates is also good, but for me personally not that interesting, Chapter 9 gives you a complete step-by-step overview of the building of a Multi Media Joomla! based website and can be a great help if you start out to implement the other ideas that come from this well written book.

I just finished my book on Joomla 1.5 SEO.

How To Build a WordPress Website

I recently switched over to a new Hosting Company after having some issues with an upgrade the old provider did on their platform. Along with this switch I want to do some testing to see how certain changes will work out.

Changing Hosting Company

One of the changes is the change of hosting company, going from a Dutch based server to a USA based server.
It should provide some more traffic from the US if the geotargetting function of Google and Yahoo / Bing takes the IP address of the server into account.
The new platform is also faster then the old provider was...

Changing URLs / Domain

The second change was a change in domain name. I went from wordpress-cms-hummerbie.com to http://wpsitebuilding.com where the old url has a 301 redirect (permantly moved) to the new domain.

Changing WordPress Theme

The third change is the change of the WordPress Theme to the Excutive Blog Theme by StudioPress which is a new theme that has also by search engine optimized by Joost de Valk from www.yoast.com.

In the screenschot below you can see how this theme works out on my new site.

How to Make Money with Autocash Test

I just setup a website with the AutoCashSystem to see if this is really functioning the way it is promoted.

I must admit the the way you set-up a website with this product is really very easy.
Within minutes I create a website about How to Make Money with Photograpy and I just had to fill in some contact details and I just chanced the Default Title of the site to something more suitable... wicht some help ove another program I use.

Here is the system promotion, just click it to read and listen to the salespage and learn from it!

Taking an Active Holiday Break

I am on leave now and there is one site I build that nees some extra attention so that is what I am working on the next few weeks.

I have alsso another site that I use as an SEO case Study project, both are build with Joomla 1.5.

There is the first one I mentioned that it really geared towards Active Vacations and Vacations Activities.

The other one is set up for Landscape Gardening and Garden Design in California.

Lets see how they improve over the nest few weeks and if I can get some more visitors to these site. A challenge that will keep me active in thsi Holiday Break...

Getting Historical and Building Joomla! and WordPress sites

Today I started a new WordPress based blog about my childhood passion Collectible Matchbox Models of Yesteryer Diecast Models which I still really love because of the fine details in those models.
They are also in much better shape then the famous Dinky Toys as most of them suffer from severe metal wear and tear.

The Danger of SEO Software

Even with such great tools like WordPress to setup a website and optimize it in the richt way, you can still go wrong...

If you use an application to check your rankings other than Google Analytics you could loose your rankings overnicht if you are checking it to much.

Running such an Automated check is a violation of Google's terms of Service...

But was it this automated checking tool, or the building of more links via directory pages?

Since the site went down the same way of an other one that did not use the directories, I believe its the overuse of one piece of software.

Is it the fault of the software? NO, it is the wrogn way you use it and how many times you use it.

Don't do multiple ranking checks in one week, use if for a maximum times of once a month.

How to undo this penalty? I guess I need to give it a rest an see what comes up a month from now.

WordPress 2.8 & 2.7 Post Title and the Biggest Usability mistake

WordPress 2.8 is out and it works great, you can build your WordPress based website or you can build your own blog faster then ever.

Well,that is if you used WordPress before... you know where everything goes on your editing screen.

You know where to write your title and the rest of your post, you know how to change between the visual editor and HTML Source code.

But what if you are completely new to WordPress?

Do you know where to write a Title for your post if you get a screen like this?

Where you used to get a screen that told you where to put your title, up to version 2.6.
But that nice Title bar is gone from version 2.7 on.

It may sound like a trivial thing to your if you are used to working with WordPress, but for newbies?

So Please WordPress developers, bring back the Title text in a new version of WordPress 2.8
That way people will know where to put the Title of their post.

How to setup a Dutch WordPress.com Blog

I am currently working on a new Blog on WordPress.com which explains what and how you can blog on the Free version of this great platform.

The first name I tried to build this thing was lessen wich means lessons and it was still free.
But I wanted something better and I got a pleasant supprise!

Handleiding which in Dutch means Manual was still free as well.... so now the blog is called Dé Nederlandse WordPress Handleiding.

There are already some posts on it and it is also high in the Google pages for the term "WordPress handleiding", go figure :-)

So yes, the URL and the Platform you post on do matter if you can pick the right one.

Joomla! JED on GPL in 2009

I just finished a new Blog post on Joomla Extensions Directory and SEO Effects on the sites and developers that are listed on that directory.

The Joomla Core team also decided that on July 1st 2009 all Joomla 1.0.x extensions will be " unpublished" which means that a lot of websites owners that only have a Joomla 1.0.x extension will either need to update that extensions to version 1.5 or search for other means of traffic...

Selling Joomla Components is not a valid option anymore if you want to get into the JED, however you will see Commercial GPL based extensions coming into the Extensions site, but the commercial part will than be like selling modification service or support on the extension.

Recently we have seen the same thing happening on the WordPress Theme site, with Brain Gardner and friends as the big winners that have their Revolutiontwo site featured on the most visited site of WordPress...great job!

I love the Themes they now provide for free!

A New Joomla Based Blog

I just started a new Blog on a Joomla based website, it is focussed on Car Dsign and Concept Cars

I will set up an RSS Feed for tha Blog as well and af course put up more categories and menu links.

Landscape Gardening a New Joomla 1.5 Website

I am setting up a new website about Landscape Gardening to do some interesting testing of Joomla SEO stuff.

Af course I don't expect to rank for the main keyword anytime soon, but it would be nice to see the effects on the speed that Google picks up on the site.

This is the first link to that site, and I will wait for a week or two before I will push a sitemap into Google's webmaster tool.

Statcounter tracking will be setup to track the process, later on I will add the Analytics code.

I just went over my first ever website I build with a CMS.
Back in the days when I first used a Content Management System called Mambo...

I needed to cleanup some menu items and restructure some menu's to get a better working field for some new articles I want to write there.

The site is now getting more focus on Systeembeheer and Netwerkmonitoring Tools which terms probably will tell you nothing, other than the site is in Dutch.

Th site itself is a Dutch information site about Network Documentation and has now similar English version on NetworkDNA, which is a method of structuring your Computer Network Documentation.

Network-Documentation.com is a Drupal based website, NetworkDNA and Netwerkdna.nl are Joomla based.

From an SEO Point of view the first one is doing well on Network Documentation Templates, but needs still growths on the main Keyword...the other two are doing fine as well, but the Dutch site is online since 2005
They also have a WordPress based Blog beside them to attract more traffic...

P.s. the main competitor for Network Documentation is a Joomla Based website :-)

The Blog that is on Bruce Clay is written by several authors and I just fell in love with Virginia Nussey....

In here latest addition SEM Synergy Extras
she did some research and, probably on the different track backs to the posts mentioned in my post on Ranking in Google in 2009 where I also write about the Searchwiki function of Google.com

She writes "familiarize yourself with the various opinions that professionals across the search industry expressed regarding the WebProNews interviews" and then Links back to the above mentioned post using Joomla SEO as the anchor text.

Adsense Niche Templates for WordPress

I just downloaded some special Niche Templates for Adsense to see how the code was made, and also to see if their claims are right...

Now all I need is a nice Niche where I can make some money..right?

WordPress Themes and the use of Excerpts

I was working with Jeanine of Nientjuh.nl on some problem solving of her WordPress based blog.
Dennis who upgraded her Blog also put on a new Theme Dawnbreak

Jeanine already has her own favourite theme up now and that does suite her site a lot better.

I have the Dutch Translation of Dawnfield now ready and will put it up in the next few days on Hummerbie.nl

This template is made for one featured post, but also uses the excerpts functions for the rest of the Frontpage, which has the potential to give this site a great look.

To accomplish that you need to add a picture and an some text into the field Excerpts "Excerpts are optional hand-crafted summaries of your content".
But to get an image there your need to use pure HTML code.

Which af course is not alwasy that easy.... but here is WordPress to the rescue.
Just put in the image you want (not to big !) into your post and then switch to HTML view.
Copy the code that is generated by WordPress and copy (or cut) it and past it into the Excerpts field.

Add some short description of the post and hit publish and your done.
Now take a look at your Frontpage and you will see the nice little pictures and short descriptions showing.

But even if your Blog Theme doesn't support this functions for the frontpage, most of theme will use it for the Archives.
Using the Excerpt field with pictures will create mucht beter archives for your users and if doen right also for Search Engines.

How to Build a Website on Blogspot.com

Image by via CrunchBaseI am currently getting a new Blogspot Blog in place on Die Cast Collectables.
It is focused on Thomas the tank Engine and Friends to start with, later on I will expand the Matchbox Models of Yesteryear series on it as well.

But I wanted the Blog to look like a regular website instead of a standard Blogspot blogger blog...
So I was setting up this site, and thought that you might want to know how to do this yourself as well.

So here it goes:

First get your blogger based blogspot site via your Google account.
Choose a name that you fit the topic you want to build your website on.
Get a good template for Blogger (I used the professional template from OurBlogTemplates.com )
Upload and active the templates via "Layout -> Edit Html -> Upload a template"
Now got to the "Page Elements" and choose edit in the Blogpost field.
Disable the fields: Date:, Posted by: and At:, this way there is no longer any date related field in your blogpost page, other then the URL where it incorporates /year/month/.
Now make sure you other Page elements fit to complete a website look, that means taling down the elements: Archive, Feed subscription links, Blogger Logo and Profile.
Use the rss.xml link to set up a new page element via a Feed widget, and take the /rss.xml link after your blogspot url to fill it. Don't call it recent posts, but something like "Latest Articles".
Use the Labels widget to create some kind of menu that is automaticly updated and set the title of the widget to "Main Menu".
Please make sure that you use a little labels as possible! That way your Menu stays short and Google and other Search Engines will have a better understanding of what your site is about.

She is starting up a new venture to earn some income in difficult economic times.

I like here idea and have build a website in Joomla 1.5, domain and hosting are done by her via bSmart Hosting.
Which is a great and cheap Joomla ready hosting firm for her purpose.

Custom Domain on Blogger

It seems I was to eager to redirect the blog to the new domain as it didn't work from about the 29th on as the transition was ready.

I looked at every setting I could find, also at Cname and DNS entries, nothing was able to get this domain working....

Then I tried to switch back to publishing on hummerbie.blogspot.com and the Blog worked agian.
Now I steel wanted to see why it didn't work and I changed to the new Custom Domain again and saved the settings to redirect it again.

And Look... now it works without further settings! So let keep it this wat and see what it brings in terms of SEO and traffic.

So I decided to use this Blog which is now on http://hummerbie.blogspot.com to revert it to http://www.hummerbie.net

I already own www.hummerbie.com and www.hummerbie.nl so the .net would be a nice addition.

Registration and Payment through Google Checkout was really easy and now the waiting begins.
Should not be longer then three days they stated.

If you do this, please don't forget to Update possible Adsense settings and Update your statcounter codes as well.

I still need to checkout how this will work on Googles webmaster and xml sitemaps...etc,etc..
You will read those answers here as I work through them to get this new domain higher in the Google SERPs.

Taking Google Adsense of Techinical Blogs

Today I am taking down all adsense blocks from the Techinical Blogs about Joomla and SEO.
Looking at the figures, it is not worth to keep them on.

Looks like the visitors to those blogs don't like the adverts, are adblind and are really high websavy to click on any of the Google Ads.

This will bring hopefully even more credibility to these blogs, as monetization is now limited to Amazon Books and Themes sites.... although I might take those off as well after the traffic investigation.
Looks like I need to write some eBooks to make money online ;-)

Updating WordPress Plugins

I just finished the updates on my most important WordPress based blogs: Joomla SEO and Zoekmachine Optimalisatie as well as WordPress Zoekmachine Optimalisatie.

The new functions for "Automaticly Update" works really great, just fill in you FTP data and off you go.... really simple.

Now lets look forward to the new WordPress release 2.7 which will help you in handling you comments in a much easier way.

Google Webmaster Blog confusion

Yesterday I wrote a large blog post on Joomla Duplicate Content as a response to some of the Joomla Bloggers who are pointing to the Google webmasters blog post about Duplicate Content.

The content of that post was more or less confusing for Joomla webmasters.
I hope that my post shed some light on this issue in a normal human readable text.

The post did take me a lot longer than normal since I wanted to include some more links so that people are aware that this is not a new issue.

My New Photoblog and IT Beheerders Blog

I am setting up some blogs, one is completely new and is a WordPress based Photoblog that you can see at Photo Digitalus Photoblog.
The Blog is made to show some of my pictures that I like and are enhanced with just to small adjustments.

The Template is Performacings Photopress with some minor changes to make it more SEO friendly.
I have to find out more about how to let a Photo blog perform better in Google, definitely thinking about allowing the robots into the image directory...

The other one is also a Dutch Blog about Computer networks, Network Documentation and Management.
I use the Silhoutte theme of Brain Gardner who is becoming one of my preferred WordPress theme designers, together with Chris Pearson.
Why? Because the make such elegant designs that have this special feeling about it... not to clean, not to Fancie.

Although I always find myself tweaking the themes just to make them work better in the Search Engines or just for me :-)
Mostly replacing codes to work with Headspace2 and sorting pages as well as taking out some code like the monthly archives links in the header source code.

I don't like that feature, since it takes up to much of my source code before the real content starts.

A Blogger Theme Title Hack that really works for SEO

A few weeks ago I decided to use Blogger.com again for testing some SEO tactics.
I changed the Theme of this Blog to use Grid Focus and apply a simple Hack for building a better post title.

The combination of those two items have brought me rankings for this blog in the first 10 rankings on Google for search results competition of 105.000 to 1.160.000 hits...
Those don't last long, I am the first to admit, but they stayed long enough to bring some visitors to this Blogpost site.

I am also testing same LSI tactics with WordPress Tutor that indeed are bringing in nice results on just the strucure I build.
Just to show you how important it is to "Theme" you site the right way. And by theming you will see what I mean if you visit the site.

Check out the page of Smashing Magazine, the Theme is way out there for me and I really like the name.

So I created some WordPress and Blogspot Blogs to write some great articles about the topics on that new site, just to get some traffic flowing....

WordPress has always been great for getting traffic... I need to think about redirection some of that traffic to my main websites...

Setting Up a new Blog for Design Cars

I have decided to put up "Just another WordPress weblog" for Design Cars
to share my passion about Cars and Design.

This time is going to be about new cars and with categories like Concept Cars, and Car Brands that I like, such as Jaguar, Porsche, Maserati and Mercedes jut to name a few.

Car Design is a competitive keyword with almost 25 Million results, so lets see how for I can get within the next year or so.
A year? Yes, and every thing sooner will be just a blast if the Blog could start ranking on the top 3 pages of Google.

Here is the link Car Design Blog and I will start optimizing it first with the right Theme (Pressrow) and a lot of Plugins that you really need.

Grid Focus WordPress Theme for my Blog

I just switched themes to the new Grid Focus new Blogger Template which looks great.
As an WordPress adapt I already knew Grid Focus as one of the best themes for SEO so I didn't hesitate to implement it here....

One thing is didn't get, is why the great simple hack to switch titles on Blogger wasn't in the theme integrated.

So I implemented it and now looking to further optimize this Blog for SEO Purposes.

I also am adding Bloggerbuster.com to my favourites.

WordPress does great in Search Engine Optimization

I did a little test on August 1th, to see if updating an "old" WordPress account would change the rankings for my Hummerbie WordPress.com based blog.

Now its the 14th and if I search for my Internet name, is comes up on 5th place, where it was not rankend before in the top 20.

Looks like the power of WordPress.com works again. Although you need to write good stuff for your visitors to make it really worth it for your visitors to come back (as allways).

Microsoft Frontpage too can bring good positions

Microsoft FrontPage is by most developers seen as the worst possible program to create a website.
You might think that there is no possible way you can create a good ranking website with just a few pages and the coding that comes out of Frontpage...

I did create a test a few years ago in Frontpage, because it was on the server of my Internet acces provider that doesn't provide support for MySQL or even PHP, yet it is a free homepage account.

Since several months now this "website" is ranking nr. one in the dutch Google site for the term "site ontwerp software"

The site was build with Frontpage and uses a CSS based Template, but you have to set the page option in Frontpage to Preserve existing HTML.
That way you can really get valid HTML and CSS code that will help to get better rankings.

I read Copyblogger and find that Chris Pearson has had a new theme for some time now, I had seen it before but was not impressed bij that time...

Now looking at the features and the showcases on the website, it is looking better and better and now there is an affiliate program as well
